Clinical Guidelines

Insurance

Students of both tracks of the BSN program must have proof of current personal health insurance and malpractice insurance coverage prior to enrollment in clinical courses and this coverage must be retained throughout the student's tenure in the BSN program. Personal health insurance and malpractice insurance coverage is required based on the policies of related clinical practice sites. Information about private carrier sources of personal health insurance and malpractice insurance is available in the School of Nursing.

Health Insurance

Students must have proof of current personal health insurance coverage prior to enrollment in clinical courses and must be continue this coverage throughout the student's tenure in the BSN program. Documentation of personal health insurance coverage is required based on the policies of related clinical practice sites which now require documentation prior to student clinical experience. All students in the BSN program are required to carry proof of current personal health insurance coverage and be able to produce it on demand both on-campus and at off-campus clinical sites. All students in the BSN program must read, sign and return the Blood Borne Pathogen Exposure form to document understanding of the mandatory personal health insurance policy.

Malpractice Insurance

Clayton State University offers a low cost group policy for students in the basic licensure track. The School of Nursing coordinates the collection of fees for this blanket coverage policy from basic licensure students in the form of a nominal annual premium (varies but has not exceeded $25).

  • Upon entry or readmission into the basic licensure track, students will have the opportunity to participate in the Clayton State University blanket coverage policy which is renewed annually. It is the student's responsibility to submit payment of the initial premium prior to the first day of enrollment in the BSN program. It is the student's responsibility to submit payment of an annual premium each August throughout program progression. Failure to renew coverage annually will result in immediate program dismissal, unless the student provides proof of coverage through a private carrier.
  • Students may also choose to purchase malpractice insurance coverage through a private carrier. Appropriate coverage is based on "nursing student" designation and policy limits of $2 million annual and $4 million lifetime. It is the student's responsibility to submit documentation of policy (including contact information of insurance company, effective dates and coverage limits) to the School of Nursing prior to the first day of enrollment in the BSN program.
  • Verification of malpractice insurance coverage is required and proof may be requested on demand. It is the student's responsibility to carry a copy of their malpractice insurance coverage policy to all clinical experiences. Students who choose to purchase insurance through a private carrier must provide the School of Nursing with a copy of their policy on an annual basis.

Professional Malpractice Insurance

Professional Registered Nurses are not eligible to participate in the low cost group policy offered by Clayton State University. Students in the RN-BSN track are responsible for providing their own professional malpractice insurance.

  • Upon entry or readmission into the RN-BSN track, students must purchase malpractice insurance coverage through a private carrier. Appropriate coverage is based on a dual designation of "professional registered nurse and nursing student" and policy limits of $2 million annual and $4 million lifetime. It is the student's responsibility to submit documentation of policy (including contact information of insurance company, effective dates and coverage limits) to the School of Nursing prior to the first day of enrollment in the BSN program.
  • Coverage by an employer is not sufficient to meet this requirement, even for active registered nurses, due to the dual designation of "professional registered nurse and nursing student".
  • Verification of malpractice insurance coverage is required and proof may be requested on demand. It is the student's responsibility to carry a copy of their malpractice insurance coverage policy to all clinical experiences to provide the School of Nursing with a copy of their policy on an annual basis.

FAILURE TO FOLLOW CLINICAL POLICIES MAY RESULT IN IMMEDIATE PROGRAM DISMISSAL!

The School of Nursing reserves the right to administratively withdraw any student who fails to adhere to any clinical course policy.
