Clinical Guidelines
Conduct
Students in both tracks of the BSN program are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and are required to follow these policies related to clinical experiences.
- Students are required to pass a dosage calculation exam in certain courses to pass the course. A student will be allowed two attempts to pass the exam. A score of 90% or higher is considered passing.
- Students will function in the practice setting within the limits of the policies of Clayton State University and the assigned clinical facility. Assignments will be reflective of the knowledge and skill level of the student. Students are required to read and sign a Student Applied Learning Experience Agreement which further explains the student's responsibility while participating in clinical learning. Students are also required to sign an Authorization for Release of Records and Information.
- Clinical instructors will assist the students in selection of clients to best promote personal growth and attainment of course/level/program outcomes.
- Students must have written physician's orders for any situation in which they administer medications or treatments. Students must be familiar with all medications prescribed for clients. Appropriate techniques in medication administration must be demonstrated always. Students may use references to facilitate medication administration.
- Students are expected to calculate all medication dosages in the clinical area with 100% accuracy. The dosage of all medications must be verified with the clinical instructor or staff nurse prior to administration.
- Students are not allowed to give any IV push
medications, as well as those listed below, without the
presence of the clinical instructor or clinical preceptor:
- INSULIN
- DIGITALIS
- ANTICOAGULANTS

- INTRAVENOUS MEDICATIONS
- Students are not permitted to administer experimental drugs.
- Students are not permitted to take verbal/telephone orders.

- Students are expected to be punctual and prepared to deliver safe and effective nursing care to all assigned clients.
- Students unprepared for clinical experiences are considered unsafe and unsatisfactory for the day and will be dismissed from the clinical setting by the clinical instructor.
- Students who are tardy or unable to attend clinical as a result of illness or for other personal circumstances, must contact the clinical instructor, the clinical agency and the School of Nursing as early as possible (within 30 minutes of the assigned clinical time). Students who fail to report clinical tardiness or absences in a timely manner or are consistently late or absent with or without the appropriate notification may receive a failing grade in the clinical practice course.
