Admission Standards

Basic Licensure

The Basic Licensure Track of the BSN program is offered to high school graduates, students currently enrolled at Clayton State University who have completed lower division course requirements and to transferees from other colleges and universities. It is usual for the number of qualified applicants to exceed the number of available places in the Basic Licensure Track; therefore, applicants compete for class space.


Eligibility Requirements

Requirements for consideration for admission to the Basic Licensure Track shall include but not be limited to the following:

  • Candidates must have a minimum overall grade point average of 2.50 on all college level work attempted and have completed a minimum of 45 of the 60 required semester credit hours of core curriculum Areas A-F and the transition course Pathophysiology with a grade of 'C' or better in all natural and behavioral science and math courses at the time of application.
  • Candidates must have a minimum grade point average of 2.50 on all math and science college level work attempted.
  • Candidates must pass both sections of the Regent’s Test as prerequisite to entry into the BSN program. Those candidates who hold a bachelor’s degree are exempt from this requirement but must demonstrate writing competency in another assessment format.
  • Candidates must satisfy the Legislative Requirement of the University System of Georgia as prerequisite to entry into the BSN program. This requirement is normally met by taking POLS 1101 and HIST 2111 or 2112 in Area E of the core curriculum. Alternative methods to meet this requirement include passing CITZ 1001 Citizenship at Clayton State University.   • Candidates must pass the Nursing Entrance Test (NET) at the national level as prerequisite to entry into the BSN program.
  • Candidates to both tracks of the BSN program are expected to meet the Performance Standards for Baccalaureate Degree Nursing and may be required to submit evidence of overall health status consistent with these standards.

Admissions Requirements

Candidates to the BSN program must meet the admission requirements of Clayton State University, however admission to Clayton State University does not constitute admission to the School of Nursing. The admission requirements shall include a completed nursing program application, official ACT/SAT score, if applicable, health records, and transcripts of previous academic work. These are to be submitted to the School of Nursing.

  • Admission to Clayton State University is prerequisite to admission to the BSN program. Transfer students must meet the admission requirements of Clayton State University and provide official transcripts from all previously attended institutions including prior nursing education, requested immunization records and other supporting documentation as requested.
  • Candidates who have attended another nursing education program at any time are required to indicate this attendance on the nursing application and to submit a letter of eligibility to return from the dean or director of the previous nursing program. Failure to disclose this information may lead to dismissal, even after matriculation, from the Clayton State University BSN program. Transfer students who have been dismissed from another nursing education program are ineligible for admission to either track of the BSN program.
  • High school students admitted to Clayton State University’s Honors Program are guaranteed admission to the BSN program when they meet the minimum admission standards. Candidates under this category must complete the nursing program application process by the deadlines established each year. Guaranteed admission is contingent upon continuing to meet the Honors program eligibility through the time of program admission.
  • Candidates requesting admission under the advanced placement option must show evidence of award of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution at the time of application. Candidates under this category are exempt from areas A-E of the University System of Georgia core curriculum. Prior to application, these candidates must satisfy area F requirements and the transition course - Pathophysiology.

Application Process

  • Completion of Clayton State University application form and submission of immunization records to the Office of Admission.
  • Completion of the BSN program application form and submission of supporting documentation to the School of Nursing.
  • Submission of official transcripts for all work completed at any college and/or university previously or currently attended to both the Office of Admissions and the School of Nursing.
  • Schedule an appointment with a Program Advisor in the School of Nursing and if selected, participate in an interview process by meeting with a nursing faculty member or a panel of nursing faculty members.
  • Completion of the Nursing Entrance Test (NET) administered by the Clayton State University Testing Center at (678) 466-4495.
  • Applications are available online at http://nursing.clayton.edu. All application materials must be submitted prior to the deadline posted by the School of Nursing.
  • The School of Nursing sends written notification of all admission decisions. Students may not enroll in nursing coursework until formally admitted into the BSN program (acceptance agreement will designate first semester of enrollment).
